Our Partnership with Banner Del Webb

Banner Del Webb hospital is only a couple of miles away from most of our homes. They have helped our residents in many different ways. Not to mention letting us come in dressed as Santa to cheer up a resident who had to spend Christmas in the hospital. For more information on Banner, please reach out to us through our website, email or call us at 623-295-9890.

19 Helpful Surprise and Goodyear Dialysis Centers

From time to time, we have a resident in one of our assisted living homes who needs dialysis treatment. We have transportation to take them to one of the local Surprise or Goodyear Dialysis centers. These residents often need to go several times a week for the treatment. So we want to make sure we are taking them to a good place.

What is Kidney Failure?

Kidney Failure can be devastating

Doctors generally prescribe dialysis treatment when someone has kidney failure. Generally that means that their kidneys only function at about 10-15% of their normal levels.
Your body uses your kidneys to:
  1. Keep waste, salt and excess water from building up in your body
  2. Regulate required chemicals in your blood
  3. Assisting the rest of your body to control blood pressure
Without your kidneys functioning well, you lose these important functions. Diabetes and high blood pressure are big contributing factors to kidney disease. Seeking treatment for these two conditions will definitely help. If you are wondering whether you might have kidney disease, check out this listof symptoms.
If you catch kidney issues early enough, they can be reversed through medicine and diet. Part of the diet includes lowering your protein levels. One way to do this is to eat a plant-based diet. For very chronic conditions the patient will have to have dialysis for the rest of their life. The condition cannot be reversed once it reaches a certain point.

Types of Dialysis

Plan to be at a Dialysis center for a couple of hours to complete the procedure
If your doctor decides you need dialysis, there are two types of dialysis they might prescribe:
  1. Hemodialysis
  2. Peritoneal Dialysis
Most people are familiar with Hemodialysis. Hemodialysis uses a machine to filter and clean the patient’s blood. The dialysis center will place a specialized tube between an artery and a vein either in the arm or leg. The blood goes from the patient, through a filtering system in the machine to remove waste, and then back to the patient.
Peritoneal Dialysis filters the blood through the patient’s own body cavity. The procedure uses a fluid that is placed in the abdominal cavity through a tube. The abdominal cavity is lined with a special membrane called a peritoneal membrane that helps filter the waste. The fluid that the tube inserts washes around the intestines and helps the cleaning process as well. The peritoneal membrane filters waste as the fluid washes it out. Then the doctor can remove the waste from the body.
Hemodialysis is generally done three times a week at a dialysis center, a hospital or at home. Peritoneal Dialysis is done at home, and has to be done 4-5 times a day.

3 Caring Medical Centers around Surprise AZ

Many of the residents in our assisted living homes require frequent visits to medical centers around Surprise and Goodyear. That’s why it’s nice to know we have so many choices for them. The medical centers around Surprise and Goodyear have the equipment, staff and resources to help the elderly.
We thought we would run down a few of our favorite medical centers around Surprise in this blog post. Soon we’ll write another post about the medical centers around Goodyear. Hopefully these posts will help. Especially if you have an older relative in the Surprise area that needs care.
These are the 3 medical centers and rehab centers our residents use on a regular basis. Based on the feedback we receive, the residents seem pretty happy with them.

1.Banner Del Webb Medical Center – the ‘Big Daddy’ of medical centers around Surprise

Banner Del Webb Hospital is the main medical center around SurpriseBanner Del Webb has a very large and impressive campus (8thlargest in the Phoenix area) just off Meeker Boulevard and Grand Avenue in Sun City. The hospital has been around since 1988. It provides a whole host of services in its 400+ beds. Some of the services include:

  • Asthma
  • Behavioral and Mental Health
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Emergency Room
  • Endocrinology
  • Endoscopy
  • Gastroenterology
  • Heart
  • Imaging
  • Integrative therapy
  • Intensive care
  • Kidney
  • Lab work
  • Maternity
  • Neurosciences and stroke
  • Nutrition
  • Orthopedics
  • Pharmacy on site
  • Pulmonary diseases
  • Rehabilitation
  • Surgery
  • Women’s Health
Banner Del Webb has won numerous awards. This year they won the IBM Watson Health “Top 100 Hospitals for 2019” award. They’ve also won awards from Health Grades:
  • “America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award for 2019” – means top 5% in the nation for clinical quality
  • “Critical Care Excellence Award for 2019” – Superior clinical outcomes in treating pulmonary embolism, respiratory system failure, sepsis, and diabetic emergencies
  • “Stroke Care Excellence Award for 2017 and 2019” – Superior clinical outcomes in the care and treatment of stroke
Banner Del Webb is one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the country
The Banner hospital system has two programs that might be especially appealing to family members as well.
  1. A very robust volunteer program– Volunteers can be any age and any experience level. They will interview each volunteer and try to find the best match for them within the hospital
  2. The “Partners in Caring” program that pairs their patients with a friend of family member. The ‘Partner’ helps the patient set goals for recovery, discusses important decisions with the patient, and advocates on the patient’s behalf.

2.  Sante Rehabilitation Center

Among medical centers around Surprise, Sante Rehab is definitely one of the more luxurious places to stay. They have a beautiful building and ground. The surroundings make their patients feel like they are being pampered while they recover. But just because they have a beautiful building doesn’t mean they don’t have excellent care.
Sante is one of the most luxurious medical centers around Arizona
In 2019, Sante received a bronze medal from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living. This is the first step towards the Gold Level of business performance. It means National recognition as one of the best health care providers in the United States. The award criteria include:
  • Very low hospital readmission rates
  • Five star ratings
  • Occupancy rates
Sante won the National Quality Award for medical centers around SurpriseSante has a wonderful dining room with great meals, experts in rehabilitation services, and a full medical staff. Sante provides a variety of medical services, including:
The transitional rehab center is the one our residents use the most.  Sante believes that a traumatic injury can be life-altering in so many ways. That’s why they believe that they need to treat the mind, body and spirit. Treating all three helps their patients more quickly.
Their excellent medical staff is on hand to treat the physical issues and provide rehabilitation. Then they go above most other medical centers around Surprise. They assign a personal care manager to their patients. The personal care manager helps the patient with their emotional and spiritual healing. Working on all three aspects of the problem will help the patient return to their normal life much more quickly.
Apparently it worked well for Gilbert, and many of our residents in our assisted living homes:

We try to adopt the same philosophy in our homes.

3.  Grandview Health and Rehabiliation Center

Grandview is first and foremost another assisted living facility. It might seem weird that we are trying to promote our competition. However, we are not promoting the assisted living part of Grandview.
Grandview has great social activities for medical centers around Surprise
We would rather promote the rehabilitation services of Grandview instead. The Grandview Rehabilitation Center is one of the medical centers around Surprise that has helped our residents. Especially when they need rehab services. Like Sante it is a very upscale rehab center.
Unlike Sante it sits right on the same campus as Banner Del Webb hospital. The area around Del Webb has the largest concentration of medical centers around Surprise. Working in conjunction with a large hospital means each patient will receive extra care.
Grandview offers both short-term and outpatient rehabilitation services. Short-term rehab helps people transition from the hospital environment. Over time they become healthy enough to go home. If one of our residents has to go to the hospital, they will often spend some time at Grandview before coming back to our home.
Outpatient rehab allows our residents to continue living in our homes, and just take day trips to receive physical, occupational or speech therapy. They can make these trips on a daily or weekly basis, or as their physician recommends.
We really enjoy the partnership we have with these three businesses and other medical centers around Surprise, AZ. Do you have some experience with other medical centers around Surprise? If so, please let our readers know in the comment section below.

Does Medicare Pay for Assisted Living

“How much?” That’s one of the biggest questions people ask as they tour our assisted living
homes. It is right after excellent care. Once people know the prices, they start wondering how
they will pay for our services. They also want to know what programs can help. We receive a
lot of questions like “Does Medicare cover assisted living?”
Medicare Does not cover assisted living
The short answer is ‘No’. Nearly all the residents in our assisted living homes pay from
various private sources:
  • Savings
  • Selling a home
  • Family and friends
  • Pensions
  • Social security
  • Other income
Although it doesn’t cover assisted living, Medicare can cover assisted living services.
Some examples include:
  • Physical therapy
  • Skilled nursing care
  • Personal care
  • Respite care
  • Transportation to and from medical appointments
  • Case management
  • Hospice

Will Medicaid Pay for Your Expenses?

In many cases Medicaid can help where Medicare cannot. Each state has their own Medicaid
requirements. In Arizona the most popular program for assisted living is the ALTCS
(Arizona Long Term Care Service) program. ALTCS can cover assisted living. ALTCS will
require families to pay a certain amount of the resident’s monthly income from Social Security
or other programs, and ALTCS will pick up the rest. Typically we’ve seen families have to pay
between $200 and $1,500 depending on their monthly income. ALTCS will still leave the
resident with some money to spend on incidentals.
There are some requirements for qualifying for Medicaid, and for the ALTCS program. We
wrote a guidebook about ALTCS that you can find here. The guidebook may not have the
most up to date information. You may want to contact a service such as an elder law attorney
or financial consultant to determine the best way to qualify.

Other Ways to Pay for Assisted Living

There is another government program that will cover assisted living – if you’re a veteran. It’s
called Aid and Attendance. The program is available to anyone who was in the military for at
least 90 days during a time the United States was fighting a war. You didn’t have to be in the
war. The fact you were in the military at that time qualifies you. Oh and you also need an
honorable discharge. Aid and Attendance won’t pay all of your assisted living, but it will help
you and your spouse defray several thousand dollars in costs each month.
Explanation of how Aid and Attendance will cover assisted living
Long-term care insurance policies are also a great way to pay for assisted living. If you’re looking for an assisted living home right now, this may not be a great solution. You have to sign up for Long-Term Care insurance well before you need it. If you did sign up for it, you may find it will cover assisted living costs up to 100%.
So although you may not be able to use your Medicare benefits to pay for assisted living, you may be able to find another way. You can also use your Medicare benefits with other programs to cover assisted living and most other aspects of your long-term care needs. We have a lot of connections in the health care industry. Especially around Goodyear, Surprise and Sun City AZ. If you need to find some answers, please contact us!
