From time to time, we have a resident in one of our assisted living homes who needs dialysis treatment. We have transportation to take them to one of the local Surprise or Goodyear Dialysis centers. These residents often need to go several times a week for the treatment. So we want to make sure we are taking them to a good place.
What is Kidney Failure?
Doctors generally prescribe dialysis treatment when someone has kidney failure. Generally that means that their kidneys only function at about 10-15% of their normal levels.
Your body uses your kidneys to:
- Keep waste, salt and excess water from building up in your body
- Regulate required chemicals in your blood
- Assisting the rest of your body to control blood pressure
Without your kidneys functioning well, you lose these important functions. Diabetes and high blood pressure are big contributing factors to kidney disease. Seeking treatment for these two conditions will definitely help. If you are wondering whether you might have kidney disease, check out this listof symptoms.
If you catch kidney issues early enough, they can be reversed through medicine and diet. Part of the diet includes lowering your protein levels. One way to do this is to eat a plant-based diet. For very chronic conditions the patient will have to have dialysis for the rest of their life. The condition cannot be reversed once it reaches a certain point.
Types of Dialysis
If your doctor decides you need dialysis, there are two types of dialysis they might prescribe:
- Hemodialysis
- Peritoneal Dialysis
Most people are familiar with Hemodialysis. Hemodialysis uses a machine to filter and clean the patient’s blood. The dialysis center will place a specialized tube between an artery and a vein either in the arm or leg. The blood goes from the patient, through a filtering system in the machine to remove waste, and then back to the patient.
Peritoneal Dialysis filters the blood through the patient’s own body cavity. The procedure uses a fluid that is placed in the abdominal cavity through a tube. The abdominal cavity is lined with a special membrane called a peritoneal membrane that helps filter the waste. The fluid that the tube inserts washes around the intestines and helps the cleaning process as well. The peritoneal membrane filters waste as the fluid washes it out. Then the doctor can remove the waste from the body.
Hemodialysis is generally done three times a week at a dialysis center, a hospital or at home. Peritoneal Dialysis is done at home, and has to be done 4-5 times a day.
