Football, Baseball, and Surprise and Goodyear Assisted Living

 A week or so ago (March 24th, 2019), some residents from our Surprise and Goodyear assisted living homes participated in a wonderful field trip. They joined players from the Desert Edge High School Football Team in Goodyear AZ for the last Spring Training game of the season at Goodyear Ballpark.

It was a picture perfect day in Goodyear. After all, there’s a reason Major League teams love coming to Arizona. Warm temps, cloudless skies and a gentle breeze made the outing especially enjoyable.

Putting together a big group outing with over 20 people takes a little planning. This definitely was NOT spur of the moment. The idea began when some of the staff from our Surprise and Goodyear assisted living homes reached out to local high schools. We wanted to see whether any kids wanted to perform their community service hours in an assisted living setting. One of the coaches, Jason Linn, reached out to us right away. He told us the head coach, Jose Lucero, is very interested in showing his boys how to lead by helping others. What a great idea!

We brainstormed a bunch of ideas and at the top of the list was a spring training game. We had to act a little quickly because the spring season ends in March. So we reached out to the Goodyear Ballpark. The people in ticket sales at the ballpark could not have been more helpful. They even gave us a wonderful discounted rate for the wheelchair section down the first base line.

Game Day 

Our residents at both our Surprise and Goodyear assisted living homes had to eat an early lunch. The game started just a little after noon, and we knew it would be pretty crowded. Coach Lucero and the players of the Desert Edge Scorpions met with us early to make sure everything was set and help pick up the tickets.

At the stadium it was indeed crowded. Everyone wanted to get one last game in the Arizona sunshine with their team before heading back to colder parts of the country. We had quite the parade line of wheelchairs and walkers moving through the crowd. Our caregivers from both the Surprise and Goodyear assisted living homes did a wonderful job of keeping everyone together.

A special thank you to the Goodyear Ballpark for providing a couple extra wheelchairs and volunteers to push them. Some of our residents can walk well on their own, but it was a long way to the seats. Plus the wheelchairs helped keep everyone together.

“Play Ball”

We arrived at our seats to find the Scorpion players already in place and ready to meet us. The wonderful young men paired off with each of our residents to watch the game and learn about each other. The football players could not have been more perfect gentlemen as they talked about life, football and their families and school. They also listened attentively as the residents talked to kids about all the experiences the residents had in their own lives.

It was a wonderful opportunity to watch the Cincinnati Reds square off against the Colorado Rockies. One of our residents grew up just outside of Cincinnati. He was a big Reds fan in his younger days. And you could tell by the look of glee on his face that he was excited to see his old team again.

Another one of our residents used to be a baseball coach. He provided us some expert analysis of what both pitchers could improve. Here is a sample:

In the middle of the 6thinning, the folks at the Goodyear Ballpark welcomed our A Paradise for Parents assisted living homes on the Jumbotron. How cool is that?

Staying Safe in a Crowded Environment

Families always worry when their elderly loved one is outside a safe place such as one of our Surprise and Goodyear assisted living homes. That’s why we took a bunch of extra precautions to make sure our residents could enjoy the game without worry.

It was essential to bring a couple of our highly-trained caregivers in case there were any medical problem. Not to mention they enjoyed the game as well. The caregivers all work in our homes on a daily basis, so they know the residents well.

We brought any medical supplies the residents might need, as well as a good amount of water to keep everyone hydrated. The residents also wore cool, loose-fitting clothes to make sure they would not overheat while still offering some sun protection. We still wanted them to have the sunshine give them a little Vitamin D!

Luckily we brought some umbrellas for the residents as well. Although the temps were in the mid-70s, you could still feel that Arizona sun. Using brightly colored umbrellas also helped find our group in the seats after a caregiver took our residents for a bathroom break.

Post Game

Although it was a close game, we figured it might be a good idea to leave early to avoid the rush. The Rockies ended up beating the Reds 4-3 to the disappointment of our Cincinnati resident. But he was having a great time anyway. At least neither team scored any runs after we left.

Once again, the Desert Edge football players helped out tremendously moving some of the residents and wheelchairs to our transportation. It’s always good to have those handicap placards on our vehicles at times like these!

The players continued talking to our residents the whole way back and it seemed like nobody wanted the day to end. We all posed for pictures in the parking lot. Then it was time to say goodbye. The players headed back to their families and we drove our residents back to our Surprise and Goodyear assisted living homes.

When we arrived back at one of the Surprise assisted living homes, we asked our Reds fan if he was disappointed about the game. His reply warmed our hearts:

Disappointed? I just had the most fun I’ve had in a long time!

What a wonderful day we had. We really appreciate and personally thank the staff and players from the Desert Edge High School Scorpion football team. These boys selflessly gave up their time to make it a very special day for our residents.

We would also like to thank all the volunteers and staff at the Goodyear Ballpark. They went out of their way to make sure all our residents really enjoyed themselves in a safe and fun environment.

We’re always looking for more ideas for activities. A couple of weeks ago, we went to a wonderful Chinese restaurant in Surprise. Any other ideas would be much appreciated. Just let us know in the comments below.

15 Nice Goodyear Senior and Veteran Restaurant Discounts

Goodyear Arizona is growing fast. In fact, it was the 3rd fastest growing city in Arizona from 1990-2000 and the 6th largest in 2018. All those people moving here need food. Many of the area restaurants are ‘hungry’ for their business and are offering discounts to win it. Many of the Goodyear senior and veteran discounts are weighted more towards the veterans. Although you can still find some good discounts for everyone.

We wrote another blog post recently with lots of other discounts in Goodyear, including a lot of the chain restaurants. In this one we try to add to the list with more localized restaurants and a few chains we left off the other post.

We called a bunch of restaurants in the area so you could just take our list and go. Check the date of this post to make sure you’re receiving the latest information. We’re originally posting this list of Goodyear senior and veteran discounts in March 2019. Then we’ll try to update it as time goes on. We can’t guarantee any of these discounts will be in place when you dine there. This information is just based on what we found when we did our research.

Taking Advantage of Goodyear Senior and Veteran Discounts

Many of the restaurants we profile in this post don’t generally advertise their discounts. Whenever a business gives a discount, they’re hoping only a small percentage of customers take advantage of it.

There is a little work on your part to take advantage of these Goodyear senior and veteran discounts. Sometimes it’s as easy as asking for the discounts. We’ll try to explain what else the restaurant requires as much as we can.

List of Goodyear Restaurants Providing Discounts

Here’s the list of restaurants providing Goodyear senior and veteran discounts. There’s no particular order to the list. You’ll have to browse depending on your mood and what you’re craving:

1. 1. Dino’s Greek and Italian – 623-535-8380 – 1550 N. Dysart Road, Goodyear, AZ 85395 – Greek and Italian cuisine with discount menus at lunch. 10% discount for all veterans on everything except their pita menu.
   2. Black Bear Diner – 623-932-2968 – 980 N. Dysart Road, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – Located just off I-10 across from the Phoenix International Raceway. Lots of ‘bear’ decorations and home-cooked, family-style foods. They give a 10% discount to veterans, have smaller portion menus for seniors at lower prices. Your family can join their EClub that will give you free breakfast on your birthday, email you with special offers and giving you a free bear claw and coffee when you sign up.
   3. Royal Jasmine Thai Restaurant – 623-236-3362 – 14970 W. Indian School Road, Goodyear, AZ 85395 – Thai restaurant that provides a 10% discount for veterans. Lots of Thai specialties and a great kids (and grandkids!) menu.
   4. Macayo’s Mexican Restaurant – 623-209-7000 – 1474 N. Litchfield Road, Goodyear, AZ 85395 – Mexican restaurant with several locations throughout the West Valley of Phoenix. Macayo’s has a discount card you can fill out when you visit them. Then the card gives you a 20% discount for seniors or a 20% discount for Veterans. You can’t take a discount for both in one trip. Also, the discounts do not apply to alcohol.
   5. Ah-so Sushi and Steak – 623-535-8900 – 15475 W McDowell Road, Goodyear, AZ 85395 – Japanese restaurant that cooks the food right in front of you. Several locations in Phoenix and Yuma. They offer a veteran discount of 10%.
   6. Majerle’s Sports Grill – 623-207-6999 – 13375 W McDowell Road, Ste. 101, Goodyear, AZ 85395. Former Phoenix Sun Dan Majerle has several restaurants and bars in Phoenix. They have a large selection of American food and drinks. And they provide a 15% discount for veterans.
   7. Mimi’s Café – 623-935-9760 – 1220 N Dysart Road, Goodyear, AZ 85395 – All kinds of delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. Mimi’s has an Eclubyou can join by giving them your email and filling out your preferences. Although there is no specific Goodyear senior or veteran’s discounts, everyone who signs up for the Eclub receives a free slice of Crepe Cake or a Free 2-pack of muffins or croissants for joining and on your birthday. You’ll also receive free meal offers in your email.
   8. Romano’s Macaroni Grill – 623-547-0299 – 1828 N Litchfield Road, Goodyear, AZ 85395 – Italian food restaurant chain with 3 locations throughout Phoenix. The Macaroni Grill provides a 10% veterans discount but no Goodyear senior discount.
   9. Akaihana Sushi and Grill – 623-935-3942 – 2293 N. Pebble Creek Parkway, Suite 101, Goodyear 85338 – Formerly ‘Mr. Sushi’, this Japanese restaurant has lower pricing on certain sushi and roles during their ‘Happy Hours’. In addition, they also provide a 10% veteran’s discount.
   10. Taste of Italy Pizza – 623-932-2272 – 3810 S Estrella Parkway #308, Goodyear AZ 85388 – Of course we have to have a pizza restaurant on the list. The owners came from Italy, started making pizza in Brooklyn, and opened the Taste of Italy restaurant in Goodyear about 35 years ago. They also offer delivery for any order over $25.00. If you go there, make sure you ask for the 10% discount for senior citizens and 10% for veterans. You can take one or the other, but no double dipping!
   11. Panera Bread Company – 623-414-4879 – 15479 W McDowell Road, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – Yes it’s a chain, but Panera is still a great place to eat. Although they don’t have a Goodyear senior or veteran discount, they do have their Surprise and Delight loyalty program. If you sign up through their website, you will receive emails from time to time with free food and coupons. You don’t know when it the discounts will come. That’s the Surprise part of their loyalty program.
   12. Black Angus Steaks – 623-535-8585 – 13766 W McDowell Road, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – Serving great steaks and burgers, Black Angus will also give a military discount to veterans of 15%. They also have a loyalty program that will give you a free dessert, a free birthday steak dinner, and other exclusive offers.
   13. Saddle Mountain Brewing Company – 623-249-5520 – 15651 W. Roosevelt St. Goodyear, AZ 85338 – A great American food restaurant with an aviation theme. The aviation theme comes out in their Taildragger brand of craft beer brewed on-site. They will also give a 10% discount to veterans who ask about it.
   14. Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q – 480-663-6311 – 845 N. Litchfield Road, Goodyear AZ 85338 – Bring your bib! This is an authentic Barbecue restaurant complete with picnic tables in a basic barn-type restaurant. After you finish licking your fingers, feel free to ask for a 10% military discount if it applies to you. Go on Mondays for a 20% military discount!
   15. Ramiro’s Mexican Food – 623-932-2144 – 378 N Litchfield Road, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – It may be a cheap hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant, but sometimes those can taste the best. Especially with a 15% military discount!

I hope this list of Goodyear senior and veteran discounts helps you save some money the next time you go out on the town.  Goodyear is a wonderful town full of fun.

Senior Discounts in Goodyear Arizona

We love having one of our assisted living homes in the city of Goodyear, Arizona. The people are wonderful, the weather is beautiful, there’s plenty to do,and there are some great shops and restaurants in the area.  Plus, there are some great senior discounts in Goodyear. We thought we’d dig around and find you a few.

Please understand these discounts are valid as of the time we write this blog post, which is before we published it. You may want to let your fingers do the walking and call the business before you travel to it. These senior discounts in Goodyear may or may not be valid at the time you visit them.

You might want to combine these discounted businesses with a trip to all the fun activities that are in the local area. We recently wrote a blog post about fun things to do for Seniors in the Surprise area. Those activities are easily accessible from Goodyear as well.

One other idea is to go to Groupon and search for businesses that interest you. Many times you can find some kind of discount deal. Remember that you have to buy the discount ahead of time, such as paying $50 for a $75 credit at a local restaurant.

Here is an example search on Groupon for restaurants. These are not just senior discounts in Goodyear. Everyone can use them.

Restaurant Senior Discounts in Goodyear

• Applebees– 13832 W McDowell Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – 10% discounts for anyone over age 60. You need to have a ‘Golden Apple Card’ to qualify. Just ask the manager for one
• Arby’s-442 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338. You can read about their 10% discount for seniors over 55 here.
• Chili’s– 1371 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338. Chili’s doesn’t advertise the 10% discount they give to 55+ people, but they do give it. Just ask your server for it.
• Dairy Queen– 13365 W McDowell Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395. They’ll give you a 10% discount or free small drink. Ask them about it.
• Denny’s– 1218 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – They will give you a 15% discount with your AARP membership card. Plus they have a menu for everyone 55+ which has smaller portions and lower prices.
• Golden Corral– 420 N Dysart Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338. Good for everyone 60 and older. The discount will only save you about 50 cents from regular menu items per meal. If you really want to save money at the Golden Corral, hit the early bird special. The buffet from 11am-4pm every day is only about 8 bucks with drinks included.
• Jack in the Box– 520 N Estrella Pkwy Goodyear, AZ 85338. They provide a 20% discount for seniors.
• Subway– Shops A, 525 N Estrella Pkwy Suite 103, Goodyear, AZ 85338. It varies by franchise. When we asked this one, they said they offer a 10% discount to seniors.
• Village Inn– 2700 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338. They give you a 10%discount if you’re over 60. Plus they have a less expensive senior menu.
• Waffle House– 820 N Dysart Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338. (623) 932-9058. Their discount varies by location. When we checked in Goodyear, we found out they only have a military discount of 10%. You might have better luck at Waffle House’s outside Goodyear.
• Wendy’s– 1178 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395. (623) 935-5532. They provide a 10% discount if you are older than 55.

Retail Senior Discounts in Goodyear

• CVS Pharmacy– 2840 N Dysart Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395. 623-536-5310. Check with your pharmaceutical and insurance companies to see what discounts are open to you.
• TJ Maxx– 1855 N Pebble Creek Pkwy, Goodyear, AZ 85395 (623) 536-6852. They will give 10% discounts for seniors on certain days of the week. You just have to be over 55. Give them a call because the days can change.
• Dress Barn– 1400 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395 (623) 535-3942Like TJ Maxx, Dress Barn has 10% discounts on certain days of the week. Last time we checked it was Tuesday. You might want to call just to make sure.
• Goodwill– 15433 W McDowell Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395 (602) 535-4287. The have “Goodwill Senior Savings Day” every Tuesday. Everyone over 60 can take a 10% discount.
• Michael’s– 1475 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – (623) 536-3158. Michael’s lets you take 10% off EVERY dayif you’re age 55 or older.
• Walgreens– 387 N Estrella Pkwy, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – (623) 215-1046. Has three locations in Goodyear. Besides Estrella Parkway, there are locations at 3361 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395 and 1654 N Pebble Creek Pkwy, Goodyear, AZ 85395. Check herefor in-store discounts. You’ll need to be a “Balance Reward Member” to take advantage of the pricing, which is easy to do.
• Harkins Movie Theaters– 15010 West McDowell RoadEstrella Falls Mall Goodyear, AZ85395 623-223-1105. Generally, seniors (over 60) receive about a $3 per person discount regardless of the show time.

Grocery Senior Discounts in Goodyear

• Albertson’s– 12970 W Indian School Rd, Litchfield Park, AZ 85340 – (623) 535-7991. If you can remember to do your grocery shopping the first Wednesday of every month, you can take 10% off your grocery bill. Just be over 55.
• Basha’s– 5115 N Dysart Rd #150, Litchfield Park, AZ 85340 – (623) 547-4580. Basha’s and Walmart collaborated on their senior discount policy. Basha also likes the first Wednesay of the month for a senior discount of 10%. The only difference we can find is that Basha’s requires a minimum purchase of $15.
• Fry’s– 16380 W Yuma Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – (623) 925-4440. Fry’s wanted to get in the act. They also have their 10% discount for everyone 55+. Guess when? You got it. The first Wednesday of the month.

Hotel Senior Discounts in Goodyear

Although most of us live around the Goodyear area, you never know when you might have guests fly in. Maybe you just want to have a “Stay-cation”?

• Comfort Suites– 15575 W Roosevelt St, Goodyear, AZ 85338 – (520) 257-3134. Comfort Suites are part of the Choice Hotels group. All Choice Hotels (Cambria also) offer 20-30% discounts to seniors. Call for eligibility.
• Holiday Inn and Suites– 1188 N Dysart Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395. (623) 547-1313. You can receive 10-20% off if you’re over 62 and belong to a senior organization.
• Best Western– 55 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85338•(623) 932-3210. You can save up to 15% at check in. Just book your hotel room through this website.
• Residence Inn by Marriott– 2020 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395•(623) 866-1313. If you’re over 62 you’ll receive a 15% discount off your room rate. You can only book a max of 2 rooms per stay using the discount.
• Townplace Suites by Marriott– 13971 Celebrate Life Way, Goodyear, AZ 85338•(623) 535-5009. Marriott applies the same discount across all their rooms.

Of course, you may need to travel to take advantage of these hotel discounts. Most airlines (Southwest, American, and United) and rental cars have discounts for seniors and AARP members.

Our Biggest Senior Discounts in Goodyear

Hopefully this will help you take advantage of senior discounts in Goodyear and a bit of the surrounding area. One of the biggest discounts we would like to offer seniors is one to our homes. If you or a family member moves into one of our homes without using a referral agent, we will pay you $1,000. That applies for referrals as well. An Important "Drug Induced" Nutrient Depletion Calculator

The residents in our assisted living homes take a lot of medications. It’s pretty typical for older people who have a variety of chronic conditions. We always think of these medications as substances that are supposed to help us. But the drug-induced nutrient depletion that can result may cause more problems than the medications solve.

Medications are really important… For the condition they target.

On the other hand they may not be so good for rest of your body. Or other conditions you might have. They may even cause a condition you did not have before.

You’ve probably seen a few drug commercials. Particularly if you watch any programs popular with older generations. The FDA requires many of these drug companies to disclose the potential side effects from the drug. Some of those side effects can be quite scary. Here’s a little parody of the commercials:

A big reason why many of these drugs cause these side effects is because they deplete vital nutrients in your body. The lack of nutrients lead to other problems. Pretty soon you are back in the Doctor’s office. The Doctor gives you more drugs to fix the drug-induced nutrient depletion caused by the first drugs.

How Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Happens

There are several ways that Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion happens:

• Certain drugs can suppress your appetite. Obviously if you don’t eat regularly, you are not receiving the kinds of nutrients your body needs

• Other drugs can increase your craving for nutrient-depleted foods, such as refined and processed carbohydrates. Processed foods and sugars will satisfy your cravings but won’t do a whole lot to bring nutrients into your body

• Internally certain medications can bind to the minerals in your gut before those minerals are absorbed into the bloodstream

• Some drugs can lower the acidity in your digestive system, which means your stomach acid becomes much less effective at breaking down your food. This problem is particularly big in the elderly, because we lose stomach acid naturally as we age

• Particular classes of drugs block nutrient levels in your cells. They can block certain enzymes or chemical receptors that aid in nutrient absorption.

• Drugs such as diuretics help flush fluids out of the body to take unnecessary waste. Along with all those fluids can go a whole lot of nutrients as well

Common Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Problems

We see a lot of common drugs across many of our assisted living residents. Many of these drugs cause the drug-induced nutrient depletion that can lead to a host of other problems. Here are some of the most common, especially in the elderly:

Acid Blockers

These are mostly antacids, H2 blockers and Proton Pump Inhibitors. The way antacids work is to change the pH of the stomach to make it less acidic. This may help your heartburn or digestion short term. It doesn’t help the breakdown of your food with stomach acid. No food breakdown, no nutrient absorption. 

H2 blockers and Proton Pump Inhibitors block histamines in your body which in turn blocks acid secretion. This is a particular problem in the absorption of Vitamin B12, especially in the elderly. It can also hurt the absorption of zinc, iron and folic acid.

Antibiotics 

We see a ton of prescriptions in our assisted living homes. And we are not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in 2015 there were 269 MILLION antibiotic prescriptions in the United States alone. Antibiotics can deplete all your B vitamins, along with Vitamin K, calcium, potassium, folic acid and magnesium. Some can cause drug-induced nutrient depletion of less well-known vitamins such as biotin and inositol.

Blood Pressure Medicine

The way blood pressure medicine works is by flushing fluid out of your body. Lower fluid, lower blood pressure. Along with the fluids go vitamins and nutrients. Many doctors will have you take potassium with the blood pressure medications to avoid that drug-induced nutrient depletion. Although these medications can also lower your levels of magnesium, sodium, pyridoxine, thiamine, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and zinc.

Cholesterol-Lowering Medications

Drugs that target cholesterol levels are generally called statins. Statins are some of the largest selling drugs on the planet. While it is a good idea to keep your cholesterol levels in check, there are definitely some side effects to statins. You can see another blog postwe wrote to find out about some of these side effects. Or read about the most widely-sold drug on the planet – the statin drug Lipitor.

The biggest drug-induced nutrient depletion that occurs with statin drugs is Coenzyme Q10. Or more commonly known as CoQ10. A lack of CoQ10 can lead to:

• Irritabiility

Yup. That last one could be fatal. It’s also what you are trying to avoidwhen you take statin drugs in the first place! The other thing to think about is that the body needs some level of cholesterol to function. Artificially lowering your cholesterol through drug-induced nutrient depletion may cause more problems than it solves.

Bottom line: Talk to your Doctor, but if you’re on a statin drug, it would probably be a good idea to take a CoQ10 supplement as well.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

After menopause, many women look to Hormone Replacement Therapy to help them regain the hormones they have lost with age. HRT can do some good things like slowing bone loss and therefore reduce the risk of falls and bone fractures.

Of course, there are some problems with HRT as well. The same drugs that help restore hormones can also deplete vitamins B6 and B12, folic acid and magnesium. It would probably be a good idea to work with your Doctor to take some supplemental vitamins if you are using HRT.

Dr. Jeffrey Gladd is an integrative medicine doctor in Indiana who was becoming frustrated about drug interactions as well.  So he decided to do something about it. 

In 2009 he created the website Mytavin to figure out which nutrients you are losing when you take certain drugs. All you do is enter the medications you are taking:

In addition, Mytavin lets you know some of the symptoms you might experience as a result of your drug-induced nutrient depletion. If you look just to the right of the symptoms, you will see a little number that has a hyperlink. Those numbers send you to a Pubmed article showing you the science behind the drug-induced nutrient depletion.

Pubmed is the official website of the National Institute of Health (NIH). It is a great database of tons of medical and health studies and research.
